U Lead We Lead 2017 Speakers Announced

The Husky Leadership Initiative is proud to present its annual kick-off event U Lead We Lead: Leadership for Equity. On October 26, students and other members of the University community will dig into stories from local luminaries who will each share their story and perspective and call you to action.

cammermeyerGrethe Cammermeyer
Civil Rights Beacon, Military Changemaker

Dr. Grethe Cammermeyer RN, PhD, COL, USA, ret, immigrated with her family from Norway to the USA. Joined the Army at 19, after college at University of Maryland, sent on active duty as Army nurse serving in Germany and Vietnam. Married fellow officer with whom she had four sons. Divorced after 15 years she continued her education earning a Master’s and PhD from University of Washington. Had concurrent careers in VA and Army Reserves and National Guard.

As part of military security clearance disclosed she was a lesbian resulting in termination of her 25 year military career. She challenged her discharge in federal court, won and was reinstated. Her story was memorialized by producer Barbra Streisand and Glenn Close as Colonel Cammermeyer in made for television movie Serving in Silence.

Colonel Cammermeyer advocated for repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Her autobiography reflects, Serving in Silence her life and struggles. She lives on Whidbey Island with her spouse Diane Divelbess.


vikramVikram Jandhyala
Inclusive Entrepreneur, Social Engineer

Vikram Jandhyala is Vice President for Innovation Strategy at the University of Washington, Executive Director of CoMotion, UW’s collaborative innovation hub, and co-Executive Director of the Global Innovation Exchange (GIX). He is a Professor and former Chair in the Department of Electrical Engineering, an Adjunct Professor in the Information School and serves on the advisory boards of UW Foster Business School’s Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship and Partners for Our Children. Vikram received his PhD degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998. He founded, along with his students, Nimbic (acquired by Mentor Graphics) and was an early employee at Ansoft (acquired by Ansys).

His current interests are in innovation, entrepreneurial and design thinking, social and organizational networks, and computational and data science.

Inspiring Educator, Equity Champion

Drego Little has taught Literature and Composition at Rainier Scholars, a Seattle organization dedicated to serving students of color, for over a decade. He was trained as a reading specialist at the University of Washington College of Education and decided to focus on literacy because “that’s where the power is”.
